I love the storybook scenes that the Intermediate Art Class at Bloomfield High School painted on a few newspaper stands.  Next year, I want to get more art classes in my region involved in this project.

On Tuesdays, I spend time in the County Health Centers in Cuba, Bloomfield and Jemez Springs trying to reach as many parents as I can with my “Read to your kids for 20 minutes a day” campaign.  Sometimes I talk to 10 parents a day and sometimes I only talk to four, but, overall, it has helped me reach more parents than I ever did when I tried to have the parents come to a training in one of the schools or other public facility.  That kind of outreach was truly frustrating for me.  All the planning and advertising and preparing snacks seemed to be for naught when only one or two parents showed up, if any. This works better for everyone involved, and I’m really getting to know the people in the Region 2 communities where tutoring is taking place

P.S.  Placing the table-top display racks on plastic shelving (available at Lowe’s or Home Depot) makes it easy for kids to reach the books, and for parents to see what’s available.  It also allows you to place more books below the rack.  Use four zip ties (front and back) to tie the rack to the shelving.
